Friday 8/10: Single Reviews (probably)

After a very quiet July, I am so glad that we had a Friday like this.  Travis Scott, Mac Miller, and YG all dropped albums and I cannot wait to listen to them.  However, I just wanted to focus on these 8 singles today.

Kap G feat. Ty Dolla $ign - Raise the Roof

Ty Dolla $ign continues on his quest to do a feature for every artist alive.  I haven't heard much of Kap G since his 2017 XXL Freshman appearance although the song he did with Lil Uzi Vert and Gunna was pretty good.  The production on this track is very typical but listenable trap.  Ty Dolla $ign is very underutilized as he's only limited to a hook and nothing more.  Kap G does his thing and just raps about possessions and other trap subject matter.

Verdict: Is okay.

DJ Holiday feat. Quavo x 21 Savage - 2 Seater

DJ Holiday, like DJ Khaled, is just playing the role of a "host" who brings rappers together to collaborate or host mixtapes.  The beat is handled by DJ Durel and Cassius Jay, who do a decent job.  On this song, Quavo's feature doesn't feel like the typical autotune drenched blah he's been doing lately.  He uses his regular voice and actually does a great job on the hook and on his verse.  21 Savage did a great job on his verse too.

Verdict: Nothing special but certainly better than expected.

Pi'erre Bourne - Marie Curie

I'm not a fan of producers rapping, especially Pi'erre Bourne.  He's one of the worst.  I have no idea how this is one of Pi'erre's weaker beats since this is his song.  It's especially disappointing since he's been killing it on production this year.  On this song, he's basically doing what other melodic trap rappers are doing but it's worse.  The hook sucks and sounds obnoxious because of the grating autotune.  The verses are more tolerable but still not interesting.

Verdict: Yo Pi'erre you wanna stay in there?

Silk City feat. GoldLink x Desiigner - Loud

Silk City is the name of Diplo and Mark Ronson's group.  I like both of these producers so I was looking forward to their first hip-hop collaboration as Silk City.  GoldLink and Desiigner is certainly an odd choice because they have no chemistry on this song whatsoever.  GoldLink's verses were pretty good but Desiigner kind of ruins the song with his hook.  The production was also average.

Verdict: Not worth a revisit and is missing "GRRRRRAH" ad-libs.

Miguel - Python

I don't have much to say about this song.  The instrumental has a funky groove, but that's the most I can say about it.  Why?  Because Miguel is incredibly quiet in comparison.  I have no idea if this was just bad mixing or an "artistic choice," but it certainly didn't pay off.  The instrumental carries this song because Miguel is really hard to understand when it's so loud.

Verdict: Either fix the mixing or speak up.

Flipp Dinero feat. Jay Critch - Wanna Ball

I couldn't find the lyrics or too much information about this song so I'll try my best.  I'm subscribed to WorldStar Hip Hop's YouTube channel, so I've seen a few of Flipp Dinero's songs posted there.  I never gave them a listen because most of WSHH's "Exclusive Content" is a bunch of generic street rappers.  I once came across an artist named Lil Donald on there.  Why the fuck would you give yourself that name?  Anyway, let's talk about the song so I don't get sidetracked.  The production bangs even though it sounds poorly mixed.  Flipp doesn't stand out to me as a rapper, but I don't think he's bad.  His voice and flow sound pretty decent.  Jay Critch is the highlight of this track as he delivers a nice verse.

Verdict: It's pretty good.

Jhene Aiko feat. YG - Never Call Me Remix

I haven't heard the original, which features Kurupt, but I like Jhene Aiko and haven't heard from her in a while so I gave this a listen.  This is a song about relationship troubles.  In this case, the problem is that Jhene's significant other doesn't call her.  There are many parts of this song that are beautiful, like Jhene's voice and the production from Cashmere Cat and Frank Dukes.  The hook is a little weak, but Jhene saves it using her voice and delivery.  And then there's YG.  He doesn't fit this track at all.  This is a song about someone not calling Jhene yet YG takes the opportunity to shout out Blood Gang.  Like, I don't think this is a bad feature, but it's extremely out of place.

Verdict: YG ruined this.

$uicideBoy$ - Carrollton

$uicideBoy$ are a group who basically makes edgy trap music.  They've put out a lot of projects and have built a niche fanbase for themselves.  I like these guys mostly for their production.  This is the first single for their upcoming album called I Want to Die In New Orleans.  The instrumental on this track sounds amazing.  The first verse from Lil Cut Throat sounds menacing but the better verse goes to Ruby Da Cherry, who uses a few different flows and straight up slays this beat.

Verdict: This is a banger.

Best of the Week: $uicideBoy$ - Carrollton
Honorable Mention: Flipp Dinero feat. Jay Critch - Wanna Ball
Worst of the Week: Pi'erre Bourne - Marie Curie
Dishonorable Mention: Miguel - Python
