This week was very interesting and packed with many new releases. Here's what I thought of 14 different singles that came out today including from Tyler, The Creator, Vic Mensa, Jay Rock, and more.
1) Tove Lo feat. Charli XCX x Icona Pop x Elliphant x ALMA - Bitches Remix
I don't listen to much of Tove Lo and I mainly checked this track out because Charli XCX was on it. I like the production on this track, which came from Ali Payami. As for the actual lyrics, this song is pretty inconsistent. I didn't like Tove Lo or Elliphant, but I loved Charli XCX and ALMA on this. I'm also a fan of the chorus, but mostly because of the pre-chorus.
Verdict: It's all over the place. [Ehhhh]
2) Tyler, The Creator - 435
There really isn't that much to talk about, mostly because this song is just 90 seconds. It's just one verse straight through with some solid bars, but it's just too short for there to be anything noteworthy.
Verdict: It's more of a snippet. I liked "Okra" better. [Ehhhh]
3) Vic Mensa feat. G-Eazy - Reverse
After The Autobiography failed to gain traction in terms of popularity, Vic is trying to get another song into the mainstream. He looks to Marshmello for production and it is a pretty good song sonically. It starts with a hook where Vic Mensa attempts to do his best Quavo impression. It's a decent hook, but it could have been easily improved if he had Quavo do it instead. Quavo will do any feature as long as he gets paid. Vic's verse is the best part of this song as it flows very well. And then G-Eazy comes in and justs ruins any possible chance of this track being great. Oh no, you have partaken in sexual intercourse with my hypothetical girlfriend, whatsoever will I do?
Verdict: This would have been way better without G-Eazy. [Ehhhh]
4) Jeremih x Ty Dolla $ign - The Light
This is the lead single for Jeremih and Ty Dolla $ign's upcoming collaborative project called MihTy. Here we have some groovy production from Hitmaka, a producer who usually makes average beats. The bassline is very resemblant of the song "Wild Thoughts" by DJ Khaled. Ty Dolla $ign only does the refrain, which sounds okay. However, Jeremih absolutely killed the hook and verse.
Verdict: This song should be longer. It could have used another verse from Ty Dolla $ign but it's great otherwise [Liked]
5) Kamaiyah feat. ScHoolboy Q - Addicted to Ballin'
I haven't heard anything about or from Kamaiyah since her appearance on the 2017 XXL Freshman List. I think she's an okay rapper, but she doesn't stand out in any way. The song is produced by the most repetitive producer alive, DJ Mustard. You may as well call this "Generic DJ Mustard Beat #857." The hook is just terrible and Kamaiyah's voice sounds very grating. Her lyrics are also very repetitive, even in her verse. ScHoolboy Q provides a decent guest verse, but it doesn't save this track.
Verdict: Generic, annoying, and all around forgettable. [Disliked]
6) 88rising feat. Joji x Rich Brian x AUGUST 08 x Higher Brothers - Midsummer Madness
I like 88rising and how hard they are pushing rap from Asia and the Far East. I love what I hear from most of their acts, especially Rich Brian. This is the lead single for their upcoming compilation Head In the Clouds. AUGUST 08 and Rich Brian are credited as producers for this track, and they do a great job delivering on the summer vibe. Joji's singing is beautiful and it makes up for a pretty repetitive chorus. We get some solid verses throughout from Rich Brian and AUGUST 08. DZ of Higher Brothers has the third verse and it's the only one that switches languages. Joji's outro also sounds amazing.
Verdict: This is a good song. I'd give it a listen. [Liked]
7) YoungBoy Never Broke Again - Genie
This is the lead single for YoungBoy's upcoming The Bayou Project. I've tried very hard to get into this guy and he isn't clicking with me. It sounds the same as most of his other songs which include generic beats, generic lyrics, and an annoying voice that sounds like a combination of Kodak Black and Young Thug.
Verdict: This song didn't make me feel any emotion, positive or negative. [Disliked]
8) Rich The Kid - Bring It Back
Before I even listened to this song, I looked at the cover and felt disgusted. This looks like the cover of a Ludacris album. Rich The Kid has been losing credibility recently as he lost a fight to Lil Uzi Vert in a beef that started because of a fucking hair color. To sum up what went down, Lil Uzi Vert went to Rich to squash their beef, then the fighting started, then Uzi chased Rich to a Starbucks where Rich flipped over the counter and became Rich The Barista. I should probably mention the song itself. It's produced by TheLabCook, who made the beat for Rich's first solo hit "Plug Walk." The production on this song sucks apart from the drums. Rich The Kid does Rich The Kid things throughout and continues to be one of the most generic rappers out there.
Verdict: This only proves my point that Rich The Kid is terrible as a solo artist. [Disliked]
9) Tory Lanez feat. Ozuna - Pa Mi
This is the lead single for Tory Lanez's upcoming project El Agua, an album where Tory Lanez will dive into Reggaeton. I like the instrumental, which gives out nice summery vibes. What brought down the song were the vocal contributions. Tory Lanez goes with his annoying high pitched autotune, which sounds grating 9 times out of 10. Ozuna is okay but doesn't improve the track too much.
Verdict: Just another Reggaeton track, nothing to see here. [Ehhhh]
10) Roy Woods - Russian Cream
Roy's voice sounds very nice and the instrumental is certainly listenable. I'm not a fan of the chorus or the shoehorned Fortnite namedrop in the second verse. There isn't too much else to talk about because while this song isn't bad, it isn't anything special.
Verdict: Just a typical flex song. [Ehhhh]
11) Social House feat. Lil Yachty - Magic In the Hamptons
I have no idea who these guys are. They literally came out of nowhere since this is the only song on their Spotify page. This group has no buzz yet somehow got a feature from Lil Yachty for their debut single. Since it is June, they were going for a summer vibe and delivers on that for the most part. I thought Yachty's feature was pretty decent.
Verdict: It's surprisingly okay. [Ehhhh]
12) Jay Rock - The Bloodiest
This is the third single from his latest album Redemption. The production from Boi-1da is very pleasing to the ears and Jay Rock actually brings it for his verses, unlike his previous singles. I like the hook which references a viral twitter video (Bitch where?). He switches up his flow for the second verse and the song gets even better.
Verdict: This is a better song than "WIN." [Liked]
13) Shy Glizzy feat. Tory Lanez x Gunna - Do You Understand?
The production from Turbo sounds very chill and smooth. Shy Glizzy delivers an okay hook but I do have one question. Who refers to their significant other as "My little butter pecan?" (yes, that is an actual line from the song) I didn't have a problem with any of the verses although Shy Glizzy is easily the weakest link on here. Tory Lanez uses his lower-pitched autotune which sounded infamously better than what he used on his song with Ozuna from earlier. I liked Gunna's flow on his appearance as well.
Verdict: It's pretty good. [Liked]
14) SahBabii - Watery
I have no idea this showed up on Spotify's New Music Friday playlist. This was a single that came out all the way back in January but apparently, it took a long time to get to streaming services. This is the latest single from his upcoming project Squidtastic. It's produced by Young Chop, a producer who I think very highly of. The term "watery" is used for many meanings, whether it's to describe his diamonds or a woman's pussy during sex. I like the hook for this track quite a bit.
Verdict: SahBabii is very good at making summer jams. [Liked]
I will begin reviewing Friday's albums tomorrow, starting with Wifisfuneral's latest project Ethernet.
