Single Reviews 5/25/2018

Well, today was pretty long.  I just spent hours on end listening to all this music that came out today.  To be exact, I listened to 4 albums.  However, I'm ready to make these reviews, starting with my thoughts on 8 singles from A Boogie Wit da Hoodie, YG, Denzel Curry, and more:

1) Casanova feat. G-Eazy x Rich The Kid - Go BestFriend 2.0

This song annoyed me.  There wasn't much to like about it outside of the production of Jahlil Beats.  I've never heard Casanova before today, but I already dislike his voice.  His hook on this song is awful.  You can't compete with such lyrical prowess spitting bars like "I'M TALKING SKEET, SKEET, SKEET!"  The features sucked on here too.  G-Eazy was boring and made me want to take a nap and Rich The Kid wasn't much better.  Rich tried something different flow-wise, but his autotuned voice was grating.  Rich The Kid should never use autotune again.

Verdict: Annoying, obnoxious, and any synonym for the word awful [Disliked]

2) Yellow Claw feat. A$AP Ferg x Creek Boyz - Fake Chanel

I love EDM/Hip-Hop crossover songs.  I have yet to hear a bad one.  Yellow Claw's production is amazing, especially when the hi-hats come in on the bass drop.  A$AP Ferg delivers a great verse with an incredible flow.  The Creek Boyz were okay, meaning they didn't bring the track down but they weren't needed.  I think replacing them with a second Ferg verse would have been even better.

Verdict: It's a good song.  Check it out. [Liked]

3) Jaden Smith feat. Nicky Jam - Icon Remix

Jaden Smith missed a grand opportunity.  He should have let his father, Will, spit a verse on the remix.  Will Smith is an icon living after all.  I gave this a listen anyway because "Icon" was probably my favorite song from his album SYRE.  I had no idea what Nicky Jam was saying, but I think he snapped on his first verse.  His second verse wasn't nearly as good.

Verdict: I love the original song, but this remix wasn't necessary.  I don't see how a Spanish verse fit at all.  However, it wasn't terrible.  [Ehhhh]

4) Young Nudy feat. 21 Savage - Since When

KidHazel did a great job on production because this beat absolutely SLAPS.  Young Nudy's hook is very catchy and I thought his verse was good, but he sounded quiet.  It must have been a mixing issue. 21 Savage, on the other hand, sounded like he was rapping at a normal volume, and he did great.

Verdict: It's a banger [Liked]

5) A Boogie Wit da Hoodie feat. Davido - Way Too Fly

This is the first single for his upcoming project called The International Artist.  This single indicates that he will be collaborating more with international artists and will be going outside of his normal lane of melodic trap music.  I thought A Boogie's hook was solid and the beat gave off a summery vibe.  I didn't care for Davido's contribution or either verse here.

Verdict: It's just another tropical melodic hip-hop track, nothing to see here. [Ehhhh]

6) Belly feat. The Weeknd - What You Want

What in the world did I just listen to?  The hook is just awful.  The production sounds like a NAV song mainly because he was one of the producers on this track.  I would rather hear NAV's robotic melodies than what Belly was trying to do here.  The Weeknd was probably the strongest part, but his verse was just decent.  It's such a shame because I was excited for this track after how much I liked "Might Not."

Verdict: This song was a massive disappointment. [Disliked]

7) YG feat. 2 Chainz x Big Sean x Nicki Minaj - Big Bank

Even though I think his production is very samey, DJ Mustard and YG are at their best when they work together.  The guest verses were pretty great for the most part.  2 Chainz always delivers a great feature.  He can make lines like "Big shit like a dinosaur did it" sound good.  Big Sean's verse is nothing to write home about, but Nicki Minaj absolutely snapped.  If there was anything to complain about, I thought the alarm sounds that took up the last 10 seconds weren't needed.

Verdict: This song is a step above "Suu Whoop." [Liked]

8) Denzel Curry - Percs

Denzel Curry continues to be one of the most underrated rappers right now.  His ear for beats and flow with lyrical prowess is just what trap music needs.  The production on this song is incredible and his flow is untouchable throughout.  There are some humorous lines like "Sound like 'Durr, durr, durr,' you like 'Oh, that's lit.' "  The only line that I didn't like was the one about a slut who "loves it in the anus."

Verdict: It's a certified dinger, possibly better than "Sumo." [Liked]
