Hot Take Tuesday 7/10/2018

I haven't done this series in a while, so I had enough time to come up with some more takes.  I'd also like to note that from now on, there will be one take that has nothing to do with music.  I'd also like to announce that Wednesday will have a different post than one that I originally said I would do.  On Wednesday, I will introduce the first post in a weekly series called Story Time.  This series will just be me telling a story about something music-related such as why I hate the Chainsmokers or where I was when I heard "The Story of Addidon."  I want to do something different every once in a while.  Okay, now back to the hot takes [all links within the post are bolded]:

1) I'm Sick of People Complaining About Oversaturation

If you browse the internet or have conversations with others outside of it, you've probably heard these statements:

"I'm so sick of Drake, he's so oversaturated"
"I'm so sick of Migos, they're so oversaturated"
"I'm so sick of Future, he's so oversaturated"
"I'm so sick of Marvel movies, they're so oversaturated"
"I'm so sick of Star Wars, it's so oversaturated"
"I'm so sick of Fortinite, it's so oversaturated"

etc., etc., etc.

You know what, your complaining is worse.  In this day and age, it's actually very easy to avoid listening to music or watching movies that are very popular but don't cater to you specifically.  Sure, you can't really escape the advertising but why waste your energy complaining about it?  The picture above depicts the look of Spotify on June 29, where every playlist, including ones without Drake songs, had Drake on the cover.  I thought the advertising was a bit much, but I'm not getting angry over it and asking for a fucking refund.  I don't mind if you actually have some valid criticism to back it up, such as Pewdiepie's recent video on why he doesn't care for Marvel movies.  I'm talking about the people who complain endlessly about not being able to escape popular things but continue to consume them anyway.  I'm talking about people who complain about yearly games like Call of Duty, Madden NFL, and NBA 2K and continue to shell out $60 year after fucking year.  I'm talking about people who continue to see Marvel movies despite that they stopped enjoying them during Phase 2.  I'm talking about people who continue to see Star Wars movies even though they complained endlessly about the new ones.  And worst of all, I'm talking about the people who think "I don't understand why people enjoy these things, they are terrible" yet continue to complain endlessly about them online.  Hating popular things and saying shit like this doesn't make you look cool, it makes you look like an asshole.  Basically, I think people complaining about oversaturation is getting oversaturated.  If people enjoy things that are popular, then why don't you just let them enjoy those things and go on with your day?  I'm sure both parties would feel much better.

2) Lil Yachty's Rapping > Lil Yachty's Singing

First of all, I'd like to say that Lil Yachty is incredibly overhated.  I don't consider myself a fan of his (and I know he has some BAD songs), although I enjoy Lil Boat 2 very much.  But I don't think he's "ruining hip-hop."  But this take isn't about that, it's about what Lil Yachty's fans think of him.  The general consensus among Lil Yachty's fans is that they enjoy his crooning more than his rapping.  I wholeheartedly disagree.  I think Yachty's fans overrate the shit out of Lil Boat.  Maybe it's due for a revisit from me, but I hated that project.  I thought the production was very colorful but was ruined by Yachty's obnoxious autotune singing.  The first thing that popped into my head when I heard his weird, goofy voice was thisLil Yachty sounded exactly like Stitch from Lilo & Stitch.  The only songs I found myself enjoying ended up being the most hated among his fans (1 Night, Minnesota).  His projects following Lil Boat had more songs that focus toward rapping and I found more songs I could tolerate on those albums (yes, even Teenage fucking Emotions).  Sure, his rapping was a bit off-beat, but at least I didn't have to hear obnoxious autotune that made him sound like an alien.  Of course, I do think that his crooning sounds much more tolerable on his other albums and guest appearances and that I think his music has gotten better (except for Teenage Emotions, which is an absolute shitshow).  However, the fans think the opposite and I really don't see it.

And now, my non-music hot take of the week:

3) The Last Jedi Is a Good Movie

It is July 2018.  There are people out there who are still complaining about a movie that came out almost seven fucking months ago, just because it didn't line up with their shitty theories.  I must say, the drama between Star Wars fans (re: manchildren) and director Rian Johnson has been very interesting.  I saw this movie months ago and I honestly thought it was great.  It was probably the most beautiful-looking Star Wars movie I've seen, which should be obvious thanks to the ever-evolving technology.  It has two of the greatest scenes in any Star Wars movie (the throne room fight and that incredible silent scene where Holdo sacrifices herself on that ship).  I also was very satisfied that unlike The Force Awakens, which is basically a shot-for-shot rehash of A New Hope, the movie actually did something different.  The movie was pretty long, but so are the other Star Wars movies.  I felt very invested in these characters and the 150 minutes went by quickly.  It's one of my favorite movies in the Star Wars series (my third-favorite to be exact, between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope) and I don't understand why people are [still] so goddamn angry about this.  There are many internet communities, such as /r/saltierthancrait on Reddit, dedicated to complaining about this movie.  There are numerous video essays that range from 10-90 minutes on YouTube where people talk about how bad it is that are still being made to this day.  There's a Kickstarter campaign trying to raise enough money to have a budget to remake the movie for fuck's sake.  Do you really think you can do better than an actual filmmaker at making a big budget sci-fi action movie?  You must be delusional if you think you can even raise the money to hire willing filmmakers to remake a box-office hit that was actually well-recieved by critics everywhere.  Here are some talking points that people who passionately hate this movie use and why I think most of them are untrue:

1) "They killed Snoke, a villain that was very prominent in the trailers."
Snoke is such an overrated villain it's not even funny. He is the least interesting villain in the history of the Star Wars franchise.  He's one of those characters that they made evil for the sake of it.  It seemed like whoever came up with the idea for this character was trying to make a second Emperor Palpatine, except it's devoid of anything that made him so compelling in the first place.

2) "Disney is shoving diversity down our throats."
This is the most baffling talking point that I ever came across.  You guys do know that Star Wars is a movie that's set in space right?  If it's not unreasonable to have alien creatures and robots, then what's so unreasonable about having black men and Asian women?  Having a bunch of different human races in a world with very diverse planets and species seems very reasonable.

3) "The side plot with the casino was unnecessary."
I can agree with this statement to an extent.  I did feel like the casino side plot kind of had an anti-climactic end and would not have needed to happen if Holdo had filled Poe in on whatever their awful plan was.  However, I found the scenes on Canto to be very stunning and added a lot of lore to the expansive Star Wars universe.  I think that side plot was essentially an excuse to expand the world of Star Wars and if that were the case then I didn't mind that.

4) "The porgs are stupid and are just thrown in there for kids."
Imagine being this mad over a cute, harmless animal.  I've seen a lot of people on the internet compare these things to ewoks and I am honestly baffled.  Unlike the ewoks, the porgs didn't help the resistance win the battle like some sort of deus ex machina.  They were there to do only one thing, and that one thing was to be cute.  I think they performed that task very well.

5) "Rose Tico is worse than Jar Jar Binks."
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS?!  Even as a child I never liked Jar Jar.  I thought he was incredibly annoying.  I don't think Rose added anything of value and the movie would be no different without her, but I certainly didn't hate her.  People were so mad about her presence in the movie that they harassed Kelly Marie-Tran to the point of deleting her Instagram account.  I did find her line about saving what we love to be really corny but it does not compare to the absolute nuisance that Jar Jar Binks (that incompetent fuck...) was in The Phantom Menace.

6) "Luke Skywalker drank out of an alien titty."
Okay, I do agree with this.  I get that they wanted to show how Luke gets around on that island but did we really need to see him drink milk out of an alien titty?  Not really.

7) "They killed Han Solo and Luke Skywalker but let Princess Leia live?"
This is another very valid point.  Carrie Fisher died about two years ago.  I got Han being killed by his own son in The Force Awakens.  I felt like Luke's death was kind of weird.  However, I have no idea how they're going to keep Leia alive in Episode IX.  I felt like her death in the first half of the movie was a fitting end to her arc, yet they resurrected her on some Mary Poppins shit?  That was weird.

8) "They ruined Luke Skywalker."
In what way?  You know that not everyone has the same personality or views for their entire life, right?  Luke had been involved with war for his whole adult life.  It has definitely taken a toll on him.  I could see why he would flee to an island to be a hermit instead of fighting in an endless war.  People were also confused about him trying to kill Ben Solo when he was about to turn evil and become Kylo Ren.  I felt like it was a very understandable action.  In Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan Kenobi saw that Anakin Skywalker was being corrupted by Palpatine and felt like he had no choice but to kill him before it happened.  Luke basically did the same fucking thing.

9) "They tried to be too much like Marvel and inserted a bunch of jokes and quips."
Star Wars isn't the bread and butter of cinema.  It's a fun space adventure series.  Sure, Star Wars is very influential in that it became the first big-budget blockbuster in cinematic history, but it's not like a Citizen Kane or anything.  The Original Trilogy had a bunch of jokes, too.

10) "JJ Abrams had such a good thing going on before Rian Johnson fucked up the series."
I hate this myth so fucking much.  When Disney signed Abrams to direct The Force Awakens, they were under the impression that Abrams would do the entire trilogy.  Abrams only wanted to do that movie and even said himself that he had no idea where to go after Episode VII.  So they hired Rian Johnson, who is a very competent director with a small, but impressive resume on his IMDb page.  Johnson basically had little to work with and unlike Abrams, he actually took risks and made something different.  His reward for taking those risks was harassment from many fanboys on social media who were thinking the exact opposite after they saw The Force Awakens.

To sum things up, the criticism for this movie makes little to no sense to me.  Star Wars fanboys hold these movies to such a high standard and make them out to be more than what they are.  They either expect the pinnacle of cinema or the same goddamn lightsaber and space fights over and over again.  Neither of those will happen because 1) it's a blockbuster, not an arthouse film and 2) having the same lightsaber and space fights would be boring as hell.  So Disney made a movie that you didn't like.  Stop plaguing the internet with your hatred and just let it the fuck go.

Sorry, that last one was a bit long, but I had to get that out of my system.  I'll be back with my first Story Time post tomorrow.
